INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

The Athens Orthopedic Clinic Sports Performance and Rehabilitation Center (SPARC) offers internships in its state-of-the-art Performance center located in Athens, GA. This is an excellent opportunity for students and young professionals who want to increase their knowledge and understanding of strength and conditioning and fitness while being exposed to a wide variety of athletes, clients, and coaches. This internship will prepare students for opportunities in the strength and conditioning and fitness field. One aspect of the internship is to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of the physiological, functional, and biomechanical aspects of designing and supervising strength and conditioning programs for various populations. The internship will provide students with both observational and hands on exercise technique and program design knowledge that can be implemented into the student’s career path.

Offered three times per year, the SPARC internship is designed to coincide with the traditional college fall, spring, and summer semesters. Our internship is highly interactive and provides opportunities to learn, design, execute, and monitor safe and effective strength and conditioning and fitness programs. The students chosen to be part of this program should demonstrate leadership, self-discipline, academic achievement, and show a career focus in the field of strength and conditioning and fitness.

In order to be considered for the internship, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Candidates must be enrolled as a second semester Junior, Senior, or Graduate student, or have graduated from, an exercise science related program within one year of application at an accredited college or university.
  • Candidates must have current CPR/AED certification and hold, or currently be pursuing one of the following certifications: NSCA CPT or CSCS, NASM CPT or PES, ACSM CPT or Health Fitness Specialist.
  • Additional consideration will be given to applicants needing to fulfill college / university course requirements.

GENERAL INFORMATION / EXPECTATIONS

The SPARC internship is a 20 hour per week on site commitment. This includes observation / training hours and weekly intern meetings and teaching sessions. Additional time will be required outside of SPARC to read required materials and prepare for article discussion and programming assignments. Schedules will be determined by the internship director to coincide with one’s availability and SPARC fitness and sports performance programs. Weekly meetings and teachings will be at a pre-determined time and attendance is mandatory. It is are required to be present at all assigned training session unless previously discussed with the intern director.
